Witchbroom / Balai de sorcière is a carnivalesque historical novel tracing the curse of plantation, slavery, indentureship and a failed independence on Kairi, a not at all imaginary Caribbean island. Lavren, the main narrator, is the last member of the dynasty of the Monagas de los Macajuelos living on Kairi, and he is anything but representative; a hermaphrodite who can travel through time, he playfully deconstructs hierarchies and mechanisms of power.
